Support for environmental associations

Mare Vivu, a youth association based in Cap Corse, is dedicated to preserving the Mediterranean by actively combating plastic pollution. It is committed to zero waste, raising awareness of climate issues and protecting marine biodiversity. It also trains and prepares young people to help meet the environmental challenges facing the Mediterranean.

Corsica, this mountain in the sea, right in the heart of the Mediterranean, is not spared from plastic pollution in its waters. Behind the beauty of its coves lies a sad reality: a huge amount of plastic waste is washing up on the surface and into the seabed.

Every year, nature is invaded by 30 million tonnes of plastic waste, half of which ends up in the seas and oceans. Mare Vivu is taking concrete action against this alarming situation by putting in place resources and actions to preserve the sea and its riches.

Maria, a woman with a passion for her island, attaches great importance to the future of the Mediterranean. She sees this basin as both living and symbolic. It is for these shared values that she decided to get involved with Mare Vivu, an association that trains young specialists in environmental action. Through Maria Battaglia, Maria seeks to involve the community, customers, partners, friends and professionals in actively supporting Mare Vivu projects that are in line with their values.

Maria Battaglia's aim is to raise funds each year to support a specific project run by Mare Vivu. In partnership with research institutions such as the CNRS, Ifremer and marine stations, Casanera supports Mare Vivu in its mission to establish a laboratory dedicated to experimentation and exchange. Maria Battaglia also supports awareness-raising among the younger generation by funding school programmes. In addition, for every piece of jewellery from the Corail collection sold and created by Maria Battaglia as a tribute to the sea, €20 is donated to Mare Vivu.

Mare Vivu is renowned for its expertise in combating marine pollution and occupies a central position as an authority in the Mediterranean region. The priority of the entire Maria Battaglia team is to teach young people about their future role as citizens, which is why they are so closely involved with the association.

Two environmental education programmes are currently being rolled out in five primary schools in Corsica: ‘Act on plastic’, focusing on plastic waste, and ‘Aire marine éducative’, focusing on preserving the marine ecosystem. Their aim is to raise children's awareness of the environment, so that they can develop a personal and respectful connection with their natural surroundings. The primary schools we follow are Petracurbara, Siscu, Erbalonga, Miomu and Petranera.

For its commitment and dynamism, Mare Vivu has been recognised by the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, and was awarded the Climate Plan's ‘Biodiversity’ prize in Paris in 2018, competing against more than 1,200 projects across France and the French overseas territories. A winner of the Beyond Plastic Med international competition in 2019 and 2021 (Prince Albert II Foundation, MAVA, Tara Expeditions and IUCN), it has been chosen for three consecutive years to represent the French delegation at the Assises européennes Jeunes et Méditerranée.
